TUC Elects Obiajulu, First Female President

THIS DAY (Lagos), February 10, 2004

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), an organisation of senior staff associations in the country last weekend in Abeokuta the Ogun State capital, elected its first female President, Comrade (Mrs.) Nkiru Peace Obiajulu.

The election was part of activities marking the TUC's 6th Triennial Delegates Conference.

With this development, Obiajulu has made history as the first female to preside over TUC or any other labour organisation in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

There are presently three labour organisations in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) presided over by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, TUC and the newly established Congress of Free Trade Unions (CFTU) with Comrade Princewill Ojeh as its acting President.

Obiajulu is currently President-General of Senior Staff Association of Utilities, Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSAUS-CGOC).

The 50 years old mother of four was born in Anambra State, attended St. Andrews Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammer School both in Onitsha and passed out in 1971. She completed her studies in General Nursing in 1972 and Midwifery in 1977 at the School of Nursing, University College Hospital (1972) Ibadan. In 1984 she bagged a B.Sc. degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Ibadan.

At different times, Obiajulu worked for the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University Hospital and in Kaduna, Kobobaji hospital and Hanoba Medical Centre before joining NITEL in 1988. She is presently a Senior Manager in the Medical Unit of NITEL.
